Students from Conrad and Hillcrest high schools volunteered to spend a recent Saturday afternoon helping clean up the White Rock Creek area. More than 70 students from the two high schools and 21 adult volunteers filled up 126 30-gallon trash bags with garbage and debris. Students from the two schools also competed in a first-ever Conservation Cup to see who could pick up the most trash. The Conrad High School Environmental League challenged Hillcrest to the competition. Conrad won the Conservation Cup by collecting 23 bags of trash. The SOLAR Preparatory School for Girls has turned lemons into a Project Based Learning experience. All students participated in the longterm project that taught them a variety of skills. The students helped build and paint lemonade stands and developed advertisements and sales techniques. Students also read fiction texts in which the main characters are selling lemonade. Parent volunteers helped the girls build the stands form scratch. SOLAR Prep is a Transformation School and part of the Public School Choice Imitative that opened in August 2016. Parents and volunteers provided breakfast and snacks every day last week to all staff at Urban Park Elementary School. Staff also enjoyed a specially decorated room where they could go and relax. The Urban Park Elementary community liaison helped coordinate the meals, which were in honor of Dallas ISD Teacher Appreciation Week, May 1–5.
Five seniors from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts have been accepted into one of the most prestigious performing universities in the nation. The T.C. Marsh Leadership Cadet Corps earned three championship titles at the 2017 Drill Battle of DFW competition last month in DeSoto. The Marsh cadets competed with schools from Red Oak, DeSoto, Glen Heights, Fort Worth and the Dallas area. They were evaluated on precision, overall appearance, command voice and military bearing. Trustee Dustin Marshall and Lori Kirkpatrick are headed to a runoff for the District 2 trustee seat. Neither candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote on May 6. The runoff election will be June 10. District 2 covers North and Near East Dallas. Meanwhile, Trustee Joyce Foreman won reelection for the District 6 trustee seat, which covers Southwest Dallas. Trustee Miguel Solis, who ran unopposed, won reelection for the District 8 seat, which covers Love Field, Northwest Dallas and Central Dallas.
On Friday, May 5, employees from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services and Sprouts helped plant a new school garden at Dallas ISD’s Stevens Park Elementary School. The Dallas Independent School District celebrated School Nutrition Employee Week by honoring five exemplary schools with the annual Heart of Child Nutrition Award. These five schools were recognized for going above and beyond to provide exceptional food and a positive experience to students. Each day last week a director from Food & Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) visited an awarded school to present the certificate and prizes, and put on a hairnet to serve lunch on the cafeteria line. Deloitte LLP, The Northern Texas PGA (NTPGA) and United Way have announced the recipients of the 2017 Deloitte/NTPGA Fairway to Success Scholarships. Six students will be awarded and join the 38 previous recipients. They are: Maritza Aguilar, Craig Jackson, Keja Johnson, Adriana Lopez, Tahania Sierra and Stephanie Vargas. Each student will receive a $20,000 scholarship towards his or her continuing education. The recipients were honored at a breakfast on May 1 at Lakewood Country Club. Established in 2007, the Fairway to Success Program annually awards scholarships to students based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, community involvement and financial need.
