Cotton Scholarship has been established by Credit Union of Texas (CUTX) to honor the legacy of William H. Ready, set, read! Join Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and thousands of other reading warriors for the free Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge June 3-Aug. 12. The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International has awarded Dallas ISD its Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for having met or exceeded the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability. The district was recognized for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending 2016. Sponsored by VALIC, the Certificate of Excellence (COE) award confirms the school business office’s commitment to financial accountability and transparency.  Recognition through the COE program can help strengthen a district’s presentation for bond issuance statements and promotes high quality financial reporting.

More than 200 Dallas ISD schools will offer students free breakfast and/or lunch over the summer. The Summer Food Service Program brings free meals to children and youth 18 years and younger at participating sites throughout Dallas. All families have to do is find a site, have their child show up for breakfast and/or lunch and enjoy a healthy meal – no registration is needed! As more students become concerned about the environment and issues of sustainability, green teams or recycling clubs are a growing presence on district campuses.  Students in these clubs sponsor recycling drives, collect office paper and cardboard on their campuses and participate in campus and neighborhood beautification efforts. They are spreading the message that recycling is an important, earth-friendly practice, and reminding their peers to recycle rather than toss reusable items in the trash. Nine Dallas ISD elementary schools were recognized for their participation in Medical City Children’s Hospital’s kids teaching kids 21-Day Challenge on Thursday, May 25. Snacks were developed by high school culinary arts students. Schools were recognized by having the most participants in the challenge, which encouraged healthy eating and habits. Each day, students were asked to prepare and eat a healthy snack that contained a fruit or vegetable, either using recipes from the program’s book or other healthy options. At its May 25 meeting, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees recognized several student-athletes and their coaches for achievement this year. Marcus Garrett, a senior at Skyline High School, is the 2016-2017 Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.
