Dallas ISD students in grades 7–10 are invited to register for a free summer PSAT prep class this summer. All sessions will be held Tuesday–Thursday from 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Students can register here. Given the benefits of a well-rounded education, Dallas ISD leaders and trustees are thrilled by the notable increase of students participating in extracurricular or co-curricular activities. Nearly 60 percent of all enrolled students this school year have participated in an extra-curricular or co-curricular activity. A proposal under consideration would give Dallas ISD more control regarding when the school year starts, as well as allow the district more flexibility in hiring hard-to-fill select teaching positions. The Texas Legislature passed a bill that allows Texas school districts to pursue a District of Innovation (DOI) designation. The designation gives districts such as Dallas ISD most of the flexibilities available to the state’s open-enrollment charter schools. Four Dallas ISD seniors are winners in the Dallas Reads College Essay Contest, earning them each a $250 gift card to Target. Dallas ISD’s Counseling Services recently honored its 2017 Counselors of the Year finalists at a special ceremony on Tuesday, May 9. James Bowie Elementary counselor Aimey Cole was named the Dallas ISD 2017–2018 Counselor of the Year at a special ceremony on May 9. Since it opened 20 years ago, Dallas ISD’s Anne Frank Elementary School became the biggest elementary school in Texas at one point, serving about 1,400 students. It was also the first school named after Anne Frank in the country, and the first named after a child in the state. Almost 200 Dallas ISD students are taking part in an innovative program that prepares them to be the next generation of Dallas leaders. The students, members of the Brewer Foundation Future Leaders Program (FLP), were recently honored at Southern Methodist University.
