Five Dallas ISD magnet schools have extended their application deadlines through Feb. 28. These include the new Two-Way Dual Language Talented and Gifted Academy and Sudie L. Williams Talented and Gifted, both set to open in August 2018. Additionally, J.P. Starks, Mark Twain and Sidney Lanier are expanding their magnet programs to grades 4-8. All five schools are accepting applications for incoming fourth- through sixth-graders.  This is a great opportunity for students currently in grades 3–5 to attend a phenomenal school in Dallas ISD. Last year, Saumya Rawat founded IT Empowerment for Her, an organization that offers camps and workshops for young girls to give them hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities, Information Technology and Computer Science. Her work drew national attention, as she was awarded the 2017 National Award for Aspirations in Computing and also the 2017 SWENext Global Innovator Award. She also won a Technology Stars of the Future award from the National Center for Women & Informational Technology. Dallas ISD will host special application workshops tonight at three magnet schools that are adding grades starting in the 2018-2019 school year. The workshops, which will help parents fill out applications for their child, will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at  J.P. Starks Math, Science and Technology Vanguard; Sidney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard; and Mark Twain Leadership Vanguard. Brandon Villegas, a freshman in the Adamson High School Collegiate Academy, will openly admit that he at first didn’t want to be a part of the collegiate academy. Sure, being able to earn up to 60 hours of college credit and learn from industry partners while still in high school seemed like a good opportunity. But it also seemed hard! However, Villegas is now fully on board with the collegiate academy. Olssen Fuentes, third-grader at Herbert Marcus Elementary School, will soon be granted with his wish of going shopping. That’s what the ten-year old asked for as a celebration of being cancer free for almost a year now. Fuentes underwent through chemotherapies for a few months as part of his battle with leukemia. The Make-A-Wish foundation surprised Fuentes at school on Feb. 15, along with his classmates, teachers and a family. When Fuentes goes on his shopping spree in a few weeks, he knows the first thing he wants to get: an iPad.

Six Dallas ISD senior student-athletes are the proud recipients of the Nancy Lieberman Educational College Scholarship. The students can use the one-time $10,000 scholarship toward college tuition payments. The scholarship goes toward deserving high school student-athletes who excel in sports and academics and have made a positive impact on the community.
