The Cat in the Hat broke loose across Dallas ISD schools to celebrate the legacy of late children’s author Dr. Seuss. To honor what would have been the iconic author’s 114th birthday, volunteers visited campuses to read to students and help with Seuss-themed activities. Over at Jill Stone Elementary School, KPMG, Central Market and Texas Instruments enchanted students with stories and poems from Dr. Seuss. As a bonus, KPMG donated books to all students at Stone and Elisha M. Pease Elementary School. Dallas ISD’s Hillcrest High School recently received the good news that it has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. IB schools share a commitment to a high quality, challenging internationally focused education. With the news, the feeder pattern now features schools at all three levels that have IB programs: Arthur Kramer Elementary School, Benjamin Franklin Middle School and now Hillcrest. That is similar to the Woodrow Wilson feeder pattern, which features the IB program at Robert E. Lee Elementary School, J.L. Long Middle School and at Woodrow Wilson. The Rotary Club of Dallas invites nominations from all district schools for its annual Service Above Self Teacher Awards. To call attention to the importance of service contributed by teachers, the organization will award up to $10,000 in cash awards and gifts to the selected teachers. Students who attend schools across Dallas ISD convened on Wednesday, Feb. 28, for the annual check presentations in the Common Cents Dallas “Pennies from the Heart” campaign. The program charges student-led teams with raising funds for charities of their own choosing. More than 200 students from 19 Dallas ISD schools participated this year. Common Cents grew from an idea proposed in 1988 by late Dallas philanthropist Louise Gartner. Every penny collected benefits the charities chosen by students, who also lead all the fundraising efforts. The Dallas ISD Social Studies Department and African American Museum in Fair Park hosted students from Zan W. Holmes, Boude Storey, W. H. Atwell and T. W. Browne middle schools on Feb. 22. La Dra. Beverly Chinn, maestra de Wilmer-Hutchins High School, ha sido nombrada al Salón de la Fama de la sección de Dallas de la National Association of Negro Musicians. Chinn ha pasado la mayor parte de su carrera como maestra de coro en escuelas secundarias en planteles con designación de Título I, y más recientemente, en Wilmer-Hutchins High School. Ervin Elementary School conocieron a los tutores de Toyota que les ayudarán con la lectura a través de TutorMate, programa de tutoría por internet que conecta a voluntarios de la empresa con alumnos para realizar lecturas virtuales. Medical City Children’s Hospital “kids teaching kids” program was at Dallas ISD’s Bowie Elementary on Tuesday, Feb. 27, for a snack demo and awards ceremony. Culinary students from Emmett J. Conrad, Skyline, Franklin Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson high schools participated in the snack contest, giving live demonstrations of their snack-recipe creations in front of students from Sidney Lanier Elementary and James Bowie Elementary. The students, parents and staff helped rate each snack to determine the winners.
