Four dancers from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts have been accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School. Three Dance seniors: Luke Qualls, Eleni Loving and Jada German, along with 2018 Booker T graduate Erin Brothers, were selected to attend the arts school in New York City. About 8 percent of applicants to Juilliard are accepted each year, and the school takes a limited number of students pursing each discipline. In 2017, five of the 12 male dancers accepted into the first-year program at Julliard were Booker T. Washington students.
Blanton Elementary School hosted their very first AVID Spotlight Visit on March 2. A Spotlight is an opportunity for campuses to share how AVID Elementary has impacted the Instruction, Culture, Leadership, and Systems (AVID Essentials) at their site. Approximately 40 visitors from school districts such as Arlington ISD, Cooper ISD, College Station ISD, attended the event to observe teachers providing best instructional practices. Assistant Principal Edgar Jaramillo led the campus’s event, discussing how AVID has caused a major paradigm shift in the campus culture. Rogers Elementary School boys and girls basketball teams got a big boost going into their final game of the regular season: drills and tips from Southern Methodist University basketball players. Five SMU players— Jimmy Whitt, Everett Ray, Isiaha Mike, Ethan Chargois, Shake Milton— and Coach Nemanja Jovanovic visited Rogers Elementary on March 20. Rogers Elementary Principal Lisa Lovato invited the SMU players to the campus. “These SMU players are a model of what our students can strive to be,” Lovato said. Student debaters from the School of Science and Engineering (SEM) made history on March 16 by landing what their coach calls a rare position by placing at the UIL state tournament. They are now preparing to compete at the national level for the second year in a row. The team comprising students Olivia Northcutt-Wyly and Sophie Rahman placed sixth in the Cross Examination category among 6A schools. La fecha límite para solicitar un traslado para el año escolar 2018-2019 es el 31 de marzo. Desde el año pasado, los estudiantes de Dallas ISD pueden solicitar un traslado de la escuela que se les ha asignado a otra escuela del distrito por cualquier motivo. U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Laurie Hernandez visited students at John Pershing Elementary School to share with them her experience as an Olympic athlete. Hernandez also spent time reading books to students as a way of promoting a passion for literacy among the youth. The visit was part of the Family for Literacy campaign by KPMG. The goal of the campaign is to provide books to students at need to help them enhance their reading skills. As part of the campaign, 500 Pershing students each received. Hernandez was a member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Estudiantes de la escuela John Pershing Elementary School recibieron una agradable visita de la medallista olímpica, Laurie Hernández. Hernández compartió su experiencia como atleta olímpica, la cual la encaminó hacia el liderazgo. Hernández también pasó tiempo leyendo algunos libros a alumnos para fomentar su interés por la lectura. Esta visita fue parte de la campaña Family for Literacy, de KPMG, la cual se enfoca en que estudiantes tengan acceso a libros.
