Dallas ISD “Adaptive Robotics” teams are gearing up to show off their robots and skills during a scrimmage on Friday, April 27. Students receiving special education services have the opportunity to explore basic concepts in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Expanding from five teams participating during the 2016-2017 school year, there are nine participating secondary campuses this year. According to the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) scores in both fourth-grade reading, and eighth-grade math and reading, held steady from the previous year. The test, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, is administered every two years. The Texas Library Association’s (TLA) Annual Conference wrapped up on Friday, April 6, in Dallas, and included representation from Dallas ISD. More than 20 Dallas ISD school librarians presented professional development sessions and district librarians introduced 12 session speakers at the at the conference, which is the largest statewide librarian conference in the U.S. There were an estimated 7,000 librarians from universities, public school districts and public libraries in attendance. During the course of a school year, Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) serves an estimated 40 million meals to district students. Now, the department is asking students and parents to feed them opinions about those meals. Responses will help shape next year’s school menus. The annual School Meal Survey can be taken in English or Spanish here. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra named Alfonso Manzanera of Stevens Park Elementary School as the winner of its Music Teacher of the Year Award. “Music teachers make an important and positive difference in young people’s lives, yet they rarely get the recognition they deserve,” DSO Director of Education Jamie Allen said. “Everyone at the Dallas Symphony – on stage, behind the scenes and in the audience – was likely inspired by a music teacher at some point in their lives.” Nominations were submitted to the DSO with an application and two letters of recommendation. Sunset High School female students had a dream come true: their very own high quality prom dress to keep! Mockingbird Bridal donated $9,000 worth of prom dresses to the school. The students browsed the collection of dresses before picking out the perfect one. “We are very grateful to Mockingbird Bridal for making this happen, ” said Sunset High School Community Liaison Nora Garcia. “This is like a dream for these girls. They get these dresses and for free.”
