The Mayor’s Back to School Fair—a one-stop shop for free school supplies and services—is happening Friday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Centennial Building at Fair Park. Analyzing brain scans and MRI data, coordinating professional sports press conferences, exploring airfield operations, witnessing a baby’s birth and working side-by-side with architects and engineers. These are just a handful of the life-changing opportunities that hundreds of high school students—many of whom attend Dallas ISD schools— experienced this summer as part of the 11th-annual Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program. Data shows a correlation between volunteers and higher student achievement, so the district highly encourages volunteerism. Students at Lorenzo De Zavala Elementary School are in for a colorful treat when they return on Aug. 20: PPG volunteers revitalized the school’s library and cafetorium. The Colorful Communities program provides PPG volunteers and paint products along with financial contributions to bring color and vitality to communities where the company operates around the world. “This gift will help us inspire our students,” said Melissa Gonzalez, principal at Lorenzo De Zavala Elementary School. “We cannot wait for our students to return to school and see the new beauty given to our building!”

Dallas ISD will kick off the 2018-2019 school year on Monday, Aug. 20. To help parents have a smooth first day of school, the district has set up two hotlines to answer questions and provide Back-to-School information such as: enrollment, bus routes, immunization requirements, school locations, school hours, and more. It’s Monday morning, and a group of Dallas ISD teachers are learning how to use a Mood Meter, which will help them recognize their own—and their students’—emotions. One of the summer professional learning sessions happening July 23 at W.H. Adamson High School is part of a continued district focus on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which helps students develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be successful in school, work and life. About 1,500 Dallas ISD school employees convened on July 25 at Wilmer-Hutchins High School to officially kick off a districtwide program to foster best classroom practices by emphasizing teamwork. Campus Instructional Leadership Teams (CILT) are made up of five people, including the principal and teachers, and will help guide a more effective and consistent implementation of curriculum across the district.
