Basketball legend Nancy Lieberman has continued to support Dallas ISD students through donations and college scholarships. About two years ago, Lieberman visited Robert T. Hill Middle School to commit her support, and she hasn’t forgotten that promise. Earlier this month, students from Hill and Bryan Adams High School volunteered to support the Nancy Lieberman Charities Celebrity Golf Classic. The tournament brought together several celebrities to raise money for her organization’s work across the country. Volunteers each received an iPad and a backpack for their effort.

Students, staff and parents focused on health at Eduardo Mata Elementary School’s Health and Fitness Fair on Sept. 20. The theme this year was “Super Heroes, Super Health!” The event included health and wellness booths, fitness demos, first aid, nutrition information and more. Children enjoyed an obstacle course, germ lessons for improved hand-washing, fitness challenges and had healthy treats to taste. Learn more about Mata, which is a Montessori campus, here.

The Thomas C. Marsh Preparatory Academy Leadership Cadet Corps presented the colors at a press conference announcing a $5 million donation to expand science education at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The district’s headquarters at 9400 North Central Expressway is now officially the Linus D. Wright Dallas ISD School Administration Building. A naming ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 26, honored Wright’s achievements. Wright was Dallas ISD superintendent from 1978–1987. Time is running out for Dallas ISD elementary school students to sign up for the 21-Day Challenge – participants must register by Oct. 1. The annual contest, sponsored by Medical City Children’s Hospital, challenges students to make healthier snack choices for three weeks. Those healthy snacks should contain at least one fruit or vegetable, and recipes available on the website can provide inspiration and great choices. Kid-friendly recipes are developed by culinary arts students in the Texas ProStart program, along with partner the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association. While teaching math at Kennedy-Curry Middle School, Annette Powers kept encountering students from J.N Ervin Elementary School unable to add, subtract or multiply. A Class of 2018 graduate is one of the top two Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars in the state. Kimmy Chang, who gradated last May as the School of Science and Engineering’s (SEM) valedictorian, earned the State AP Scholar Award by scoring a 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP exams, and the highest average scores on the AP exams she took. More than 2,300 students and their parents attended the 2018 Dallas ISD Districtwide College Fair on Sept. 19 to learn about opportunities available after high school graduation. That attendance figure represents more than 1,800 Dallas ISD students, nearly 50 more who attend schools outside of Dallas ISD and the about 400 parents/guardians who also visited the fair. When they arrived, they were greeted by dozens of representatives from colleges, universities, trade schools and the military who were eager to share information about their institutions. Dallas ISD staff from various district departments and identified schools collaborated to complete individualized consultation sessions that align to five specific components of the Funds for Achievement and Racial Equity (FARE) Grant.
