Fourteen Dallas ISD students have been named among the 16,000 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, with a chance to become one of the 7,500 finalists who will take home scholarships worth a combined $31 million. Juniors and seniors at Booker T. Washington for the Performing and Visual Arts got a shock on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Dr. Scott Rudes, who has served as the school’s principal the past five years, announced he had an opportunity too good to pass up and was resigning. With the district’s help, he said, an interim principal had been found: actor Kevin Hart. The students erupted with excitement – understanding Rudes’ ruse – to welcome the actor and comedian. El Dallas ISD ha superado la matrícula escolar pronosticada para este año escolar. Hasta el 7 de septiembre, más 156,100 estudiantes se habían inscrito en el distrito. The Districtwide College Fair and Historically Black Colleges & Universities Showcase is set for Sept. 19 from 5:30–8:30 p.m. at Ellis Davis Field House, 9191 Polk St. and nearby D.A. Dallas ISD is holding a job fair to recruit bus drivers with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) on Saturday, Sept. 15. The job fair is from 8 a.m.–noon at Leonard Center, 5151 Samuell Blvd. The job fair is open to Dallas ISD employees and members of the public with a CDL interested in possibly becoming a Dallas ISD bus driver. Dallas ISD bus drivers are paid a minimum of $16.63 per hour, with additional pay consideration for directly-related years of experience.
