Growing up in the rural-coastal town of Isabela, Puerto Rico, in the 1990s, I was always ready to go on an adventure with my brothers and childhood friends. We would discover new trails and creeks, collect seashells and sea glass along the beach, and explore tropical coral reefs together. When Veronica Allen, director of Section 504 and Dyslexia Services, first became a dyslexia bilingual evaluator in Dallas ISD 15 years ago, the district did not have any dyslexia interventionists. Now, Allen is proud to say the department includes over 200 dyslexia interventionists and dyslexia evaluators thanks to their drive to develop leaders in the district. The entire team recently came together to celebrate the department’s growth and team members’ many accomplishments, including 149 currently employed certified Wilson dyslexia practitioners and 49 currently employed certified Wilson dyslexia therapists who have earned their certifications over the past few years due to…

Dallas ISD’s robotics teams achieved remarkable success at the VEX Robotics World Championship that took place in May. Students showcased their technical prowess and teamwork, leaving a lasting impression on the judges. The “LadyBots” from Casa View Elementary earned the Girl Powered and Build Awards. Alex Sanger Preparatory took home the Sportsmanship Award and Winnetka Elementary’s two teams won the Energy Award. In the middle school division, the School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove was awarded the Energy Award as well. Echoing the 18th Century, Skyline High School looked like a scene from Hamilton, one of Broadway’s most recent musical phenomena. Elementary students paraded through Skyline’s gym wearing tailcoats, frock coats, prairie dresses, and colonial soldier costumes as they participated in the 2023 Lone Star Challenge program in early May.
