Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services is – according to the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) – among the Best of the Bunch. The TDA awarded Dallas ISD with the honor for its commitment to teaching children about healthy lifestyles using Texas agriculture. Fifth-graders from Frank Guzick Elementary traveled to Waco and Austin on an Education in Action Discover Texas Field Trip on Feb. 20 to experience what they are learning in social studies and science. Students visited the Texas State Capitol in Austin and Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown. Top Teacher Spotlight showcases outstanding educators across Dallas ISD who are thriving under the Teacher Excellence Initiative.  Karla Smith’s passion for STEM led her to the otherworldly experience of attending a Space Camp for teachers at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Alabama. A Skyline High School senior broke her school’s record for the largest fundraiser by an individual student after raising $6,500 for the Pennies from the Heart campaign. Common Cents – Pennies from the Heart is a yearly, districtwide effort where students from all grade levels raise funds for charities of their own choosing. The Dallas ISD Alternative Certification Program (ACP) trains college graduates who studied a career outside of teaching to follow their passion and lead a classroom. Dallas ISD will launch a record number of choice programs and schools in the 2020–2021 school year, significantly increasing the education choices in families’ backyards. Representatives from the Dallas ISD Office of Transformation and Innovation surprised schools with the great news on Friday, Feb. 21. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Alan King–the well-respected education leader who at one point served as Dallas ISD interim superintendent–as the district’s interim chief internal auditor. King’s appointment follows this month’s resignation of auditor Steve Martin. In addition to his time as Dallas ISD interim superintendent, King’s resume includes serving as Dallas ISD chief financial officer and chief of staff.
