Dallas ISD teachers Katey Batey and Thom Browne will soon join remarkable speakers from across the country, including former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, at the Extra Yard for Teachers Summit sponsored by the College Football Playoff Foundation. In January 2015, Dallas will host the first-ever College Football National Championship, and as a way to exhibit their commitment to education, the Foundation worked with the local Commit! After a dominating start, the Skyline Raiders football team succumbed to a rally by two-time defending state champion Allen on Dec. 13, falling 52-34 in the Class 6A Division I Region II semifinal at SMU’s Ford Stadium. More than 18,000 people gathered to watch as Skyline took on Allen in Skyline’s deepest playoff run since it battled Southlake Carroll in a regional semifinal in 2011. A lone oven, refrigerator and a few kitchen cabinets are all that remain from what used to be a home economics classroom at James Madison High School. Now, parent volunteers have a fantastic new space to work in thanks to support from The Heart of America Foundation and Capital One. Last year, Madison’s library was renovated by the same two groups. In the Parent Center, Dallas ISD crews ripped out the no-longer-used cooking equipment, rebuilt walls, hid original piping and installed new flooring. Students across Dallas ISD are wrapping up the semester with end of semester tests called ACP exams which stands for Assessment of Course Performance. ACP exams happen in every school, across every grade level and in most subjects. Students at Cesar Chavez Learning Center in East Dallas just completed their ACPs in music. In January, a task force made up of parents, distinguished art, music and PE teachers, the district’s TEI Focus group and principals will meet to talk about the ACP exams and how the district might improve these tests. Students who face the challenges of blindness, deafness, physical or intellectual disabilities have a team of advocates working to ensure they have the same opportunities to progress academically and socially as their fully abled peers. The Special Education department provides a variety of services to level the playing field for students challenged with disabilities. The department offers a full array of services to help disabled students. These range from occupational/physical therapy, which provides equipment such as walkers for students with cerebral palsy, to Dyslexia Services, which assists dyslexic students to develop literacy skills.
