A professional development contract approved by trustees Thursday will enhance Career and Technology Education opportunities for students by making STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) training and curriculum available to more teachers. The contract with Project Lead the Way, a non-profit organization that provides STEM curriculum and teacher professional development, will expand course offerings for Dallas ISD teachers at UT-Tyler, one of its designated training centers. The agreement will provide two-week onsite training programs that feature instructional coaching and development. The five-year, $470,000 professional development investment in teacher training will equip teachers to better prepare students to enter STEM careers.…

The deadline for submitting a Distinguished Teacher Review application was midnight Thursday, Jan. 22, and the number of submissions indicates teachers are excited. Of the more than 1,400 teachers identified to take part in the Distinguished Teacher Review process, 1,390 applied – representing more than 94 percent of those eligible. The Distinguished Teacher Review is a component of Dallas ISD’s new evaluation system, the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI), and assesses the quality of instruction, leadership, lifelong learning, and contributions to the profession of the district’s most effective teachers. Several Dallas ISD high school programs collaborated to celebrate trustees with a special dinner on Thursday, Jan. 22, in honor of School Board Recognition Month. The reception was conducted before this week’s regular board meeting. Students from Emmett J. Conrad, Thomas Jefferson, Justin F. Kimball, Lincoln, Moisés E. Molina, Multiple Careers Magnet, Roosevelt, Skyline, Wilmer-Hutchins, and Woodrow Wilson high schools had hands in the event. Four-time World Champion and Track and Field Olympic Gold Medalist Natasha Hastings will host the Dallas Elite Youth Track and Field Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Jan. 24 at Hillcrest High School located at 9924 Hillcrest Road.   The event is free and open to students and athletes ages eight to 18. William Cabell Elementary School Principal JoAnne Hughes, her staff, and the school’s families have a lot riding on the implementation of personalized learning at the northwest Dallas school. Cabell is one of five schools approved to adopt a personalized learning instructional model next school year. Cabell serves 600 students in grades PK-5, sixty-six percent of whom are limited English proficient and 95 percent of whom receive free or reduced price lunch. Science teacher Dana Clark is an education trailblazer. She’s traveled the world in search of knowledge to bring back and share with the students in her classroom at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School where she’s taught for 10 years. Clark has studied sea turtles in the Amazon of Peru, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, to study climate change, and this summer helped to map the seafloor around Alaska as part of a seafaring expedition sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
