Under Dallas ISD’s new Teacher Excellence Initiative evaluation system, we are now able to identify what highly effective teaching looks like. The Distinguished Teacher Review is a process within TEI that seeks to identify the district’s most effective teachers by examining their contributions to the teaching profession, lifelong learning and leadership. In any given year, more than 1 million homeless teenagers in the U.S. lack the necessities they need for normal life. According to DoSomething.org, a not-for-profit organization for young people and social change, the item most requested by homeless youth is a basic pair of jeans. When seventh-grader Daniela Mora at Robert T. Hill Middle School learned about the organization’s national Teens for Jeans campaign to provide jeans for homeless youth, she seized the opportunity to help her community, and organized a denim drive at her school. Dallas ISD staff and students supported two fundraising campaigns to benefit the American Heart Association on Friday, Feb. 13. District employees supported the “Go Red for Women” effort, paying $5 each for the privilege of wearing jeans to work. Many wore red shirts to raise heart-health awareness. For the students’ part, many solicited pledges for the annual Jump Rope for Heart event.
