For 25 years, Dallas ISD’s Principal for a Day program has brought classrooms and boardrooms together, giving students a glimpse into real-world careers and showing community leaders the incredible work happening inside the classrooms.
Almost 200 civic, business, and nonprofit leaders stepped into the role of principal at campuses across the district, shadowing school leaders, meeting students, and gaining a firsthand look at the heart of public education.
Participants assisted with morning announcements, participated in classroom lessons, and attended student-led activities throughout the day. Many stay connected long after the event, partnering with schools to expand mentorships, internships, or special projects.
“It gives us a real glimpse into the importance of education, the importance of a strong school district, the importance of being able to hire great principals, great teachers, and the importance of also giving back to the community,” said Jorge L. Calderón, Dallas Market President at Capital One.
Calderón was one of several business leaders who participated in this year’s Principal for the Day, which occurred on Oct. 29. He, along with Kenny Cooper, a former FC Dallas player, emphasized the importance of giving back to the community.
I grew up in this area and had amazing teachers, coaches, mentors, and principals, people who spoke life into me and supported me along the way. To have the opportunity to step into their shoes, even for a moment, is really special, and I truly appreciate it,” Cooper said.
After 25 years, Principal for a Day continues to serve as a bridge between Dallas ISD and the community, inspiring future leaders both inside and outside the classroom.
