We recently caught up with Alexander Cruz, who is now an assistant director of bands at Sunset High School. Read about his educational journey at Dallas ISD and how his teachers impacted him to give back to her community.
What high school did you graduate from and what year did you graduate?
Sunset High School in 2018.
What is your current occupation?
I am the assistant director of bands at Sunset High School.
What are your responsibilities?
Assisting with directing marching bands, concert bands, and jazz bands, while helping with administrative tasks like budget management, equipment maintenance, student recruitment, and communication with parents, boosters, and other team members.
What are some career or personal highlights/accomplishments?Marching in the Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South marching band, becoming a part of Kappa Kappa Psi national honorary band fraternity, and coming back to my alma mater to teach.
What made your Dallas ISD education unique?
My education in Dallas ISD was unique because it combined real-world experiences with academics. From leadership roles in student organizations to hands-on learning, I felt prepared not just for college or university, but for whatever the future had in store for me.
Who was your favorite Dallas ISD teacher or what was your favorite course?
Rametria Smith–she was a huge inspiration for me. She made me realize that music and teaching was the path for me. She was a phenomenal band director.
What advice, if any, would you offer to students who are interested in your career field?
Music education is more than teaching notes; it’s about shaping lives through the power of music. Keep growing as a musician, stay flexible in your teaching, and never stop learning from your students. Your love for music will be the spark that helps them discover their own.
