5 essential tips for a smooth back-to-school transition

As Dallas ISD gears up for the new school year, families can help ensure a smooth start by keeping these five important reminders in mind.

By reviewing these key reminders, families can help students start the year prepared and confident. Dallas ISD looks forward to welcoming students back for a year of learning, growth, and success.

1. All new and returning students must enroll

Enrollment is required for all students, whether they are joining Dallas ISD for the first time or returning for another year. Families can complete enrollment online or in person at their child’s campus. For enrollment information, click here.

2. Clear backpacks are required for all students

To enhance campus safety, all students, from pre-K through 12th grade, are required to use clear backpacks. Mesh backpacks are acceptable; however, clear ones are preferred. Small, non-clear pouches for personal items such as wallets, keys, and hygiene products are permitted inside the clear backpack. For more guidelines on clear backpacks, click here.

3. Make sure immunizations are up to date

Texas law requires students to be current on their immunizations to attend school. Families should review their child’s vaccination records and schedule any needed shots before the first day of classes. Updated records can be submitted to the school nurse to avoid delays in attendance. For more information, click here.

4. New phone policy in effect

A new state law known as House Bill 148 now prohibits the use of personal electronic devices, including cell phones, during the school day. This applies to all grade levels. Campuses will provide guidance on how devices should be stored, and students will be able to access them before and after school. For more information, visit this article on The Hub.

5. Check bus routes and learn about the new student bus card

Families should confirm their child’s bus route and stop location before the first day of school. New this year, elementary students will receive a bus card that must be scanned when boarding and exiting the bus. This card will help families and the district track when and where students get on and off. Route information and details about the bus card are available on the Dallas ISD Transportation Services website.
