For the sixth consecutive year, Dallas ISD has been named one of the best communities for music education by the National Association of Music Merchants.
The Best Communities for Music Education Award, which celebrates schools and districts for their commitment to music education and recognizes the collaborative efforts of educators, administrators, families, and community members, is presented to those who demonstrate achievement in efforts to provide music access and education. It highlights how music education is deeply woven into the district’s culture and commitment to student development.
“It is a fantastic feeling for the district to be recognized for a sixth straight year,” said Matthew Edwards, Visual & Performing Arts director. “It shines a spotlight on the amazing work our music educators and students are doing every day.”
Dallas ISD is one of the largest districts in the nation to receive the award, leading to various opportunities on a large scale and directly benefiting students.
This includes supporting the district’s Hometown Music Grant, providing digital music equipment, curriculum, instruments, and professional development for teachers. Two digital music classes at the high school level have also been implemented.
“Our department is always looking at ways to respond to the changing needs of the students and teachers we support,” Edwards said. “We engage in a constant dialogue with the campuses about what is working and also how we can improve.”
As a result of these collaborations, Dallas ISD students have the opportunity to visit the Dallas Symphony, Texas Ballet Theater at the Winspear, Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Children’s Theater. They will have had campus visits from Cara Mia Theater and the Cliburn Foundation, Edwards said.
“The award is a source of pride. It is an outward sign of the inner conviction and hard work we see all the time from the students and team members,” Edwards said. “It translates into even more opportunities for students to be exposed to music at every level and, more importantly, perform music of their own.
