For the third year in a row, the School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center swept the Texas Math & Science Coaches Association State Meet, earning first place in every category. Three graduating seniors also earned scholarships for their outstanding individual cumulative scores.
Dallas ISD sent 211 high school students from 12 campuses to the TMSCA High School State Meet, where they competed in four categories: number sense, mathematics, calculator applications, and science.
Julie Majewski-Smith, TMSCA executive director and state tournament organizer, attributes Townview SEM’s success to the hard work of both their students and coaches.
“Continuity of both SEM student participation and coaching expertise has built a strong tradition of excellence,” Majewski-Smith said. “Another contributing factor to the SEM’s tradition of success is the system of ‘feeder’ schools from Dallas ISD’s strong middle school programs, allowing them to have a steady flow of experienced and knowledgeable participants as a strong base to build upon.”
The School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center also performed well, securing sixth place overall in the state.
At the middle school level, 160 students from 15 campuses participated at TMSCA State Meet.
Notably, teams from J.L. Long Middle School, William B. Travis Academy/Vanguard for the Academically Talented and Gifted, and School for the Talented and Gifted in Pleasant Grove all achieved top 10 rankings in their respective divisions, showcasing the strength of Dallas ISD’s math and science programs across different grade levels.
“It was an awesome experience for all students and coaches,” said Ma Teresa Malana, Long’s TMSCA coach. Students demonstrated excellence in Math and Science while having fun experiencing the trip, food, and hotel experience in San Antonio.”
