Dallas ISD’s internship program is just one way the district is committed to preparing students for the workforce through real-world experiences.
Recently, the district hosted the 2025 Internship Expo, which provided networking opportunities and on-site interviews in addition to guidance on writing resumes, interview skills, and workforce etiquette.
“Internships provide real-world experience that can help students develop skills and knowledge that go beyond the classroom,” said Shannon Green, project manager for Workforce Development. “This experience is invaluable in preparing for college or future careers, as it allows students to explore potential career paths and gain hands-on experience in their fields of interest.
Held at the Cedar Valley Campus of Dallas College, 600 students interviewed for jobs around the district. As a part of Dallas ISD’s broader goal to equip students with employable skills, the internship program also bridges classroom learning with hands-on experience in a professional setting.
Over the summer, students selected for the program will participate in an internship designed to align with each student’s program of study and involve meaningful projects and tasks that reflect real-world expectations.
As part of the program, the district works with industry partners, providing students with access to work in fields like healthcare, technology, business, education, and the arts. This gives them the chance to explore fields they may not have considered and mentors who can guide them along the way.
“These internships can provide students with a competitive edge when applying to colleges or entering the workforce, as they demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and a commitment to personal and professional growth,” Green said.
For her, the most rewarding is seeing how the students grow during their time in the program.
“It’s not just about the internships themselves, but about the transformation students undergo through the process,” Green said. “When students present their work, it’s a culmination of their hard work, learning, and personal growth. They get to step into the spotlight and confidently articulate their journey, which often boosts their self-esteem and motivates them to pursue even bigger goals.”
