In collaboration with the Next Steps Initiative, Microsoft recently hosted its second Dallas ISD Middle School Day to empower the next generation of innovators.
Over 150 scholars were treated to a day filled with rigorous activities centered around technology, computer science, and engineering.
“The Computer Science and Technology Department continues to ignite the flames of our young scholars by providing engaging student experiences that develop the whole child,” said Shendolyn Anderson, coordinator of the Computer Science and Technology department. “This initiative aligns with our district’s goal of providing students with real-world learning experiences and preparing them for college and career readiness at an early age.”
As part of the event, students dove into interactive projects and games using Microsoft Make Code, sparking a newfound passion for programming.
Guided tours of Microsoft’s cutting-edge facilities offered students insight into where innovation thrives. There were also panel discussions with diverse engineers who highlighted the importance of perseverance and the multitude of paths to success.
More than just technical skills, the day also emphasized the importance of networking. Workshops were tailored to help students hone their communication skills and build connections that will shape their future endeavors.
The engineering design challenge, a paper plane competition, was a standout feature of the event. This challenge was designed to nurture creativity and problem-solving skills among participants, providing them with a tangible sense of accomplishment and capability.
Students had the unique opportunity to interact with minority and underrepresented engineers in the field. These engineers served as invaluable role models and sources of inspiration, leaving the students feeling inspired and hopeful about their future in technology.
