Amidst the challenges and joys of parenthood, Dallas ISD recently hosted a districtwide event to welcome and bring together student-parents to learn, and support one another.
Organized by the Student Engagement and Support department, the Secure Start Celebration allowed students to meet face-to-face and connect over their shared experiences.
Guests also played games, enjoyed a special meal catered by Skyline High School, and took home a variety of prizes like gift cards, baby wipes, diapers, and a few big-ticket items such as a stroller, car seat, and a crib.
Chef Jason Blackwell at Skyline says every meal was prepared with the expectant mothers in mind, free of allergens or ingredients that could cause acid reflux. The menu included chicken and waffles, veggie pasta, seafood pasta, and fruit and vegetable platters.
“It makes me kind of sentimental because we get to help others and make them feel seen and heard. We may not fully understand what they’re going through, but we can help by bringing food because food can bring happiness to people. So that’s why we do it with love,” said Iris P., a culinary arts senior at Skyline.
Guest speakers from Parkland Health and the City of Dallas WIC office were also present to educate student-parents on child safety strategies and other important tips on parenthood.
Erica Delgado, coordinator for Student Engagement and Support, said she hopes students felt a sense of community and walked away with helpful advice.
“My hope is for them to know they’re not alone. Maybe they’ve found their child’s new best friend,” she said. “In addition, I hope they are aware of what services are out there because there’s so much they can get for free and just don’t know about.”
