Skyline High School cosmetology students redefine beauty education

Cosmetology students at Skyline High School are redefining the standards of beauty education. They leverage geometry for precision hair cutting, chemistry for hair coloring, and mastering the art of entrepreneurship to become experts in their field.

When students begin the cosmetology program, Career and Technical Education instructors, Shannon Smith and Tracy Williams, introduce their students to the foundation of cosmetology, dating back to thousands of years ago when Egyptians used kohl eyeliner and the Greeks made makeup out of crushed berries.

By following the evolution of cosmetic materials, students enter their sophomore year with an understanding of the connection between tools or products used in the past and what they begin implementing in the classroom.

“Before I got into this program, I didn’t know how to properly care for my skin or hair. Now, I have a better understanding so I can help others,” Skyline High School student, Yuridya R. said.

Junior year, they begin the work-based learning part of the program by obtaining a state license in cosmetology and earning wages at various businesses, such as salons, day spas, wax centers, and massage centers.

“I wanted to be in the program to make people feel good about themselves and be my own boss. I plan to pursue a career in esthetics (skincare),” Skyline High School student, Mariah S., said.

By senior year, students are proficient in their craft and can work in any sector of the beauty industry, which is considered a fairly lucrative career path. Many of the students envision themselves owning a salon someday.

“If you have a degree and cosmetology license, you will always have a job somewhere doing something to make money. We have an opportunity to build relationships with our students and watch them grow into young adults who are empowered and feel like they can conquer the world,” Williams said.
