Dallas ISD delays week one kickoff times due to record-breaking heat

DALLAS — Dallas ISD will delay kickoff times for 11 of the 14 varsity football games beginning Thursday, Aug. 24 due to record temperatures in North Texas.

“With the extreme heat we are experiencing, Dallas ISD is adjusting game times to provide student-athletes and fans a more comfortable experience,” said Corey Eaton, assistant athletic director for sports medicine. “In recent practices and scrimmages, we’ve noticed the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) reading reduces around 7:30 p.m.”

The district monitors the WBGT index to assess hot weather conditions. The index measures ambient temperature, relative humidity, wind, and solar radiation that can be used to monitor environmental conditions during exercise. Dallas ISD does not allow teams to practice or scrimmage if the WBGT reading is 92.1 or higher and limits practice and activity above 90.0. WBGT is different than heat index because it is a more comprehensive measurement of heat stress on the body.

The district will continue to monitor weather conditions and adjust as needed. Games with an affected time change include:

Thursday, Aug. 24
Thomas Jefferson at F.W. Carter Riverside, Handley Stadium: 7:30 p.m.
Roosevelt at F.W. Northside, Farrington Field: 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 25

South Oak Cliff vs. Duncanville, SMU’s Ford Stadium: 8 p.m.
Bryan Adams vs. Chisholm Trail, Ranger Stadium: 8 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 26
