The AlumNow series showcases former students’ post-graduation successes.

We recently caught up with Shante Akafia who is an Assistant City Manager for the City of Lewisville.

Read about her high school experience at Dallas ISD helped her earn her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Public Administration from The University of North Texas.

What high school did you graduate from and what year did you graduate?

Magnet Center for Government, Law & Law Enforcement in 1993.

What are your responsibilities as an Assistant City Manager for the City of Lewisville?

Assists in the planning, directing, management and review of the activities and operations of the City. Coordinates City services and activities among City departments and with outside agencies. Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager. Supervises the Police Chief, Fire Chief, Human Resources Director, Library Director and Sustainability Manager.

What are some career or personal highlights/accomplishments?

I’ve worked for six different cities over my 23 year career. My background is in Human Resources by which I served as a Director of Human Resources for over 15 years. I recently transitioned to the City Manager’s Office for the City of Lewisville. I received my bachelor and master degrees in Public Administration as a direct link to my high school experience.

What made your Dallas ISD education unique?

The ability to identify my passion for local government at such an early age. I would love to  return to my high school to serve as a mentor to the students and/or as a presenter.
