More than 1,200 Dallas ISD seniors recognized for their multilingual skills

Over 60 different languages are spoken throughout Dallas ISD. Being bilingual is a distinct honor and a unique skill set that continues to be in high demand in the workforce. And Dallas ISD students continue to differentiate themselves from other students across the country by receiving state and global recognition for proficiency in a foreign language. Whether students were born speaking a second language or learned one of the 10 different languages the district offers, they have the opportunity to earn local and global recognition for their multilingual skills, expanding future opportunities.

This year, more than 1,200  seniors received the Texas Performance Acknowledgement for Bilingualism and Biliteracy, known unofficially as the Texas Seal of Biliteracy. In recognition of their accomplishments, these students wore blue and green cords at graduation and will have the acknowledgement listed on their high school transcripts.

The Texas Seal on a student’s transcript indicates they have attained a higher level of proficiency in two or more languages, as exhibited in one of six different ways, including testing at a proficiency level of at least Intermediate High, taking three or more years or four or more levels of foreign language classes, earning a three on an AP language test or a four on an IB language test, or participating in a Dual Language program through high school. Additionally, Emergent Bilinguals must exit the bilingual program with all criteria met, including obtaining Advanced High on the TELPAS English (exit) test.

Dallas ISD also participates in the Global Seal of Biliteracy, which can be earned through proficiency testing. Students can test a native language other than English, or they may test a language they have learned in a foreign language class. At least three years of the class are required to be able to score high enough for a Global Seal. This provides proof for potential colleges, employers, and others that the student’s skills are at the Functional or Working level fluency, based on an international standard.

This year, more than 570 students qualified for the Global Seal, and at least 200 more recipients are expected once this year’s seniors’ AP scores are finalized.

Currently, both seals are available in more than 100 languages and dialects.
