Dallas ISD secondary STEM students recently competed in Texas Math & Science Coaches Association State (TMSCA) tournaments, where they took top awards in several categories and were awarded two scholarships.
Students from nine high schools traveled to San Antonio in March to compete at the state level in four contests: number sense, mathematics, calculator applications, and science. The School of Science and Engineering and the School for the Talented and Gifted took first and fourth place overall, respectively, in the state competition.
Two Science and Engineering students received the prestigious TMSCA Top Gun Award for their overall scores in their grade levels. Top Gun recipient Samuel S.-H. received a $950 scholarship for placing fourth overall in the state, and Stellan S. was awarded an $800 scholarship for finishing in sixth place.
In April, 209 students participated in the TMSCA state competition for middle schools. To be eligible to participate in the state competition, students had to qualify at TMSCA invitational meets held across Texas. Dallas ISD had 16 middle schools to meet the scoring requirement to compete at the TMSCA State Tournament held in San Antonio.
The Student Activities Department coordinated transportation, food, and lodging for the 294 secondary students who traveled to San Antonio for the state secondary competitions.
“The TMSCA competitions are among many opportunities that the department provides for Dallas ISD students participating in extracurricular activities,” said Julian Spearman, Student Activities coordinator. “The STEM competition gives our students a chance to showcase the knowledge they’ve learned in the classroom in a competitive environment.”
