Mount Auburn STEAM Academy celebrated its 100th anniversary along with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the recent completion of the Bond 2015 program on Thursday, Oct. 10. Students, faculty, alumni and community members honored the school’s rich legacy with opening remarks from Principal Brittany Swanson and District 8 Trustee Joe Carreón.

“No matter the differences that may have existed 100 years ago, I am certain that one thing remains unchanged: the unwavering commitment of Mount Auburn’s dedication to the students in this neighborhood,” Swanson said.

The Mount Auburn kindergarten folklorico team performed a traditional dance for Hispanic Heritage Month, followed by a student presentation in which four winners of the school’s essay contest read memories of their time at Mount Auburn aloud. One student pointed out that Mount Auburn is older than the invention of the traffic light, Band-Aids and the first cheeseburger.

The school was recently awarded a “B” rating by the Texas Education Agency for the 2022-23 school year and opened up a new science lab last month. Mount Auburn’s historic alumni include singer-songwriter Edie Brickell and Heisman Trophy winner and former football player Tim Brown.

Mount Auburn’s Bond 2015 curbside appeal upgrades include a renovated facade, main entry landscaping and exterior lighting. New interior features include a secure front vestibule, HVAC system and renovated gym restroom.
