Tips for families of students taking the school bus

0

As every Dallas ISD student returns to school on Monday, the Dallas ISD Student Transportation Services urges parents of students who will be riding the bus to be prepared for hot days.

The department published a list of tips and suggestions so that parents can become familiar with their bus routes, be aware of the pick-up and drop-off guidelines, and know the best ways that their students can combat the current heat wave while on their way to (and from) school. Please read the recommendations below:

  • Parents of students who will be riding the school bus during the 2022-2023 school year can review the bus routes by visiting www.dallasisd.org/transportation
  • The Student Transportation Services Department highly suggests that every parent of a students who is riding the school bus this season reviews “The Dallas ISD Bus Rider Safety Guide for Students and Parents.” This online document (available in English and Spanish) offers helpful information, such as guidelines for waiting for the bus, entering, and exiting, crossing the road when a bus is present, behavior on the bus and more. To access the document, visit www.dallasisd.org/Page/81823.
  • The department would like to remind families that the staff and drivers are working hard to always keep the buses at a comfortable temperature, especially during the hottest days. Every Dallas ISD school bus has a built-in air conditioning system. However, when compared to the air conditioning system of a car, a bus’ system might not be as effective at cooling the inside because of the way it’s built.
  • Student Transportation Services recommends that students are dressed appropriately for the heat. While the Dallas ISD dress code prohibits the use of caps and hats inside schools, they are recommended at bus stops to help protect students from extreme heat, especially where shaded areas are not available. The head covering can be put away in the backpack before entering the school.
  • While normally food and beverages are not allowed on the bus, students will be permitted to bring water bottles while riding the bus.
  • In case a school bus malfunctions while on its route, the driver and monitor will work to ensure the students are safe from the heat. The department recommends that students have a water bottle and a head covering in case they need to exit the bus to wait while arrangements are being made.
