Summer Breeze 2022 offers something for every student

Who said that summer school is boring? No student who will experience summer school in Dallas ISD, for sure.

During Dallas ISD Summer Breeze 2022, students will have two months to discover the excitement of summer learning. Thanks to the district’s free summer school program, students will have a chance to connect with their peers, partake in rigorous tasks, accelerate learning, and improve their social and emotional well-being

In June, students can attend district-created summer learning programming at designated campuses. In the first four weeks of July, Dallas ISD partners will provide enrichment activities for students.

Summer Breeze 2022 is designed to address the holistic physical and emotional needs of students, to prepare them for future learning opportunities, and to engage them for the upcoming school year, said Sharla Hudspeth, executive director for Dallas ISD Extracurricular and Extended Learning Opportunities.

“Dallas ISD provides students the opportunity to grow and learn during the summer months in an environment that is fun and exciting,” Hudspeth said. “Summer Breeze 2022 has been designed with that in mind. Students will be engaged in academics in the morning and extracurricular activities in the afternoon.”

There’s something for every student in Summer Breeze.

In the Pre-K Summer Cool Camp, the district’s youngest students will experience a full day of activities ranging from reading and math content to exposure to extracurricular and enrichment activities.

High schoolers will have the opportunity to participate in remote extended learning, online, for:

  • Credit recovery, to  earn credit for courses not earned previously,
  • Acceleration, to get ahead by earning credit for courses not taken previously, or
  • Test preparation, to study for the ACT, SAT, or TSI.

P-TECH and Early College summer programs will be offered in which career exploration will be a big theme, with camps designed to help prepare middle schoolers for the early college high school experience.

“The summer school program is the perfect vehicle to help students make educated choices about the different learning opportunities in Dallas ISD,” said Merrill Devenshire, director for Dallas ISD Extended Learning Opportunities. “Summer Breeze 2022 will give students an early look at the career pathways that will impact their lives beyond their high school journey.”

Fun enrichment offerings abound, including robotics, science and fine arts camps, academic decathlon, yearbook workshop, debate, coding, chess, cheerleading, band, strings, dance, mariachi, theatre camps, and more.

Dual language ESL camps include science discovery, Spanish immersion, refugee summer enrichment, and newcomer language camp.

And Extended School Year services provide individualized instruction for eligible students with disabilities.

With a student cast and crew, a musical showcase in June will cap off the summer, as the 37th Annual Summer Youth Arts Institute presents Erykah Badu, the Musical.  The production will be produced and performed at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters.
