Math and science are as competitive as any sport event throughout the district. Just ask any of the hundreds of Dallas ISD secondary students who put their skills in math and science to the test at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) state competitions recently held in San Antonio.
The TMSCA State High School competition took place on March 19, and Dallas ISD students from Science and Engineering Magnet received awards in all four categories: Number Sense, Calculator, Math, and Science. Two students received the prestigious Top Gun status which means they will receive a scholarship.
After attending qualifying meets, Dallas ISD middle school students traveled to San Antonio on April 2 to compete at the state level in math and science. TMSCA qualifying meets occur between October and March leading up to the state competitions in April. Five middle school teams were recognized for their academic skills with trophies and medals.
Dallas ISD Student Activities coordinated travel, food, and lodging to the TMSCA state competition for 174 students and 30 coaches from 13 Dallas ISD schools. Participating middle schools included: Greiner, Franklin, Harry Stone, Travis, Piedmont Global, TAG in Pleasant Grove, J.L. Long, Dealey, Rosemont, Atwell, Dallas Environmental Science Academy, Sudie Williams, and Spence.
TMSCA is an organization dedicated to creating math and science competitions that help promote performance mastery on STAAR and in UIL academic contests.
