At Young Women’s STEAM Academy at Balch Springs, the staff is committed to ENGAGE communities, EQUIP themselves, and ENGINEER learning environments that EMPOWER girls to EXCEL!

The neighborhood school fosters the critical skills necessary for college and career success through immersion in integrated coursework, meaningful leadership opportunities, and social-emotional support rooted in their core values: Growth, Innovation, Responsibility, Leadership and Service.

Dallas ISD’s neighborhood schools are home to tradition, pride, friendships, diversity and innovation.

“Your community school is just that – community. In it are several of the girls you’ve known since elementary school, people you see on weekends and outside of school, and staff members who were there to teach your siblings. All of this creates a connection to the school and more of a reason for you to do great in it and bring pride to your neighborhood,” said Principal Gabrelle Dickson.

Young Women’s STEAM Academy offers a unique non-academic program with multiple activities and learning experiences such as college and career-ready skills, cross-curricular, hands-on and collaborative projects through STEAM week activities. The in-house program’s schedule includes social and emotional learning lessons and team-building competitions such as debate, architecture, poetry, step/cheer and entrepreneurship. There are opportunities to engage with speakers from different careers, field trips to explore post-secondary interests, and more!

“We’ve earned the state’s highest rating of “A” with 7 of its 7 academic distinctions and the district’s highest rating of “Accomplished,” Principal Dickson said. “More than 50% of our eighth graders are accepted at early college/magnet high schools, including Booker T. Washington HSPVA, where our alumni represent ALL of our performing and fine arts programs.”

More 2021 achievements and recognitions:

  •       Softball City Champions AND Runner Up
  •       Robotics & Destination Imagination State Qualifying Teams
  •       Top 10 Pandemic Resilient Schools in North Texas

As the school promotes student voice, a culture of thinking, and a future of female firsts in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math, faculty and staff take pride in cultivating the next generation of change-makers!
