Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, Deputy Superintendent Susana Cordova and Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall on Monday visited Adelle Turner Elementary School, one of Dallas ISD’s 41 Intersession campuses, to welcome students back to in-person instruction for the 2021-2022 school year.
The special celebration, a part of the Mavs Take ACTION! Plan, was hosted by Jefferson Dental & Orthodontics. In addition to donating dental kits and backpacks filled with school supplies for all 350 students, the Dallas Mavericks have committed to adopting Adelle Turner Elementary through the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
Through the multi-year Adopt-A-School program, the Mavericks will walk hand in hand with students and teachers by investing in resources and supplies, and providing training, volunteers and mentorship from the Mavericks organization, while working collaboratively with the school leadership to develop a shared vision grounded in serving the students and creating an inclusive and diverse school environment.

More on Intersession and District Calendars
The Intersession Calendar is one of three school calendars for Dallas ISD this year to help address unfinished learning during the pandemic. Forty-one schools are part of Dallas ISD’s Intersession Calendar model.
Intersession instruction will extend from Aug. 9 to June 23, allowing time for five additional intersession weeks spread throughout the year to address unfinished learning. Not all students will be asked to attend the extra intersession weeks.
Dallas ISD has three different calendars with three different start dates this month. Five schools with a School Day Redesign Calendar started on Aug. 2, and the other district schools with a Base Calendar will start Aug. 16. Schools that had strong support from staff and families had the option of adopting an alternative calendar with the earlier start date.
The alternative calendars are part of a comprehensive approach the district is taking to help ensure that the pandemic doesn’t have a long-lasting impact on student learning.
