A national leader in Dual Language instruction, Dallas ISD proudly serves as one of the largest programs in the nation, with instruction offered at 145 schools.
Dallas ISD students can begin their journey to becoming bilingual and biliterate in prekindergarten and can remain in the program through high school. If the Dual Language pathway is continued through 12th grade and TEA criteria are met, Dual Language students can earn the bilingualism and biliteracy performance acknowledgement on their high school transcript. This performance acknowledgment serves as Texas’ Seal of Biliteracy, an accolade that is nationally recognized.
“The Dual Language program is one of the biggest and greatest things about Dallas ISD,” says Daniel Rios, Dual Language Math Teacher at J.L. Long Middle School. “There are so many different schools that have dual language programs. This allows students to experience and enhance their learning.”
The J.L. Long Middle School Dual Language program benefits students in many ways, introducing them to diversity and culture while giving them the opportunity to grow and connect more to the outside world.
At the high school level, Dual Language students have a variety of choices.
“At Woodrow Wilson High School, we have Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in math, science and Spanish, and it is possible for students to also be involved in some of our outstanding programs such as business, engineering or fine arts, so really this is a great supplement for any student considering the program,” said Alessandra Mercon, assistant principal at Woodrow.
Parents are key in growing and sustaining a dual language immersion program.
“One of the things that we are proud of at Woodrow Wilson High School is our parent involvement. We offer several opportunities for parents to get involved in the educational and social growth of their students,” says Yeheni Fuentes, Dual Language teacher at Woodrow. “We also have bi-weekly teachers’ meetings, to come up with ideas to better our Dual Language program and try to keep track of our students, making sure that our students are where they need to be, and they are taking the correct classes. We are very proud of our program at Woodrow!”
Dallas ISD’s top-notch nationally recognized Dual Language program gives your child an opportunity to learn how to speak, write, read, listen, and think in both Spanish and English. Gaining this skill set prepares students for greater career and professional options, and gives them a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
