Become a teacher with Dallas ISD’s Alternative Certification Program

In partnership with Dallas ISD’s Professional and Digital Learning Department, the Dallas ISD Alternative Certification Program enhances the alternative teaching route by providing a standards-driven training program where future educators can engage with others, explore and practice new and innovative approaches to teaching, and develop a deeper understanding of their impact on student achievement in the Dallas Independent School District.

Each Dallas ISD employee has a network of friends, family and acquaintances. When employees are able to connect someone from their network to Dallas ISD’s Alternative Certification Teaching Program, opportunities become available to bring more talented and passionate people into the profession.

The Diaz brothers offer just one example of the many referral success stories. Ruben Diaz, a math teacher at Bryan Adams High School, said, “I have been working for the district for seven years and have greatly enjoyed growing and learning with my kids as an educator.”

Miguel, Ruben’s younger brother, had previously expressed interest in becoming a teacher, so when Ruben heard about Dallas ISD ACP, he immediately referred his brother to the program.

One of the reasons Miguel is interested in becoming a teacher is to help students build a strong academic foundation that will help them break down difficult problems, rather than be broken down by those problems, he said.

“As a Dallas ISD alumnus, I want to give back to my community,” he said.

Dallas ISD ACP offers a variety of certification areas. Miguel decided to enroll in Core Subject EC-6, which focuses on English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and fine arts.

“It has been a long intensive process from passing my content exam to the pre-service training,” he said. “But it will definitely be worth it when I have my own classroom.”
