As he presented a $100,000 check donation to the Dallas Education Foundation to support Dallas ISD schools impacted by the Oct. 20 tornado, John Trevino, the vice president and general manager of KDAF-TV (CW-33), remarked how this donation was especially close to his heart.
Trevino lives just blocks away from where the tornado hit in October, and he saw first-hand the damage caused by the storm.
“As local broadcasters, our job is not only to inform and educate, but to invest in the community,” Trevino said. “I’ve given away a lot of big checks in my career, but this one is the most impactful for me.”
The donation came from Nexstar Media Foundation, which since 1958 has given away grants to nonprofits making an impact in the community. Nexstar Media Group owns, operates and provides services to 197 television stations across the country, including CW33.
As the executive director of the Dallas Education Foundation, which is the nonprofit and philanthropic arm of Dallas ISD, Mita Havlick said she became emotional when hearing about the generous donation.
“I feel like we live in a news cycle where things are reported and forgotten very quickly. But this tornado disaster continues to impact our students, staff, teachers and schools every day, and it will continue to impact them well into the future” Havlick said. “We are so grateful to Nexstar and CW33.”
