Dallas ISD celebrates National School Lunch Week

To recognize the National School Lunch Program that serves 30 million children each day across the country, Dallas ISD is celebrating National School Lunch Week from Oct. 14-17. The theme, “School Lunch: What’s on Your Playlist,” spotlights how school cafeterias are serving up healthy menu items that kids want to eat, with increased choice and customization.

National School Lunch Week (NSLW) is highlighting the nutritious foods available daily at Dallas ISD schools. Planned activities for the week include:

  • Lunch Playlist: Each day a new or popular food item will be highlighted as a part of the Dallas ISD “Lunch Playlist.”
  • “Take Your Parent To Lunch Week”: Parents of elementary school students will have the opportunity to have a school lunch with their child, while discovering how much school lunch has changed.
  • #DISDLunchPlaylist 4-Day Challenge: High School Students will be challenged to take a photo with their school lunch (i.e. #MyPlaylist) every day and post the picture on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #DISDLunchPlaylist. Students who post a photo at least 3 of the 4 days will be entered into a drawing to win Apple Air Pods or an iTunes gift card.

“School lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium,” said Michael Rosenberger, executive director of Dallas ISD’s Food & Child Nutrition Services. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program and the appealing variety of choices in the cafeteria.”

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) has been fueling students for success for more than 70 years. Thanks to the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), a program of the NSLP, Dallas ISD students eat breakfast and lunch at no charge. The initiative reduces burdens for both families and district leadership and helps to ensure that students receive nutritious meals.

Parents and students can follow Dallas ISD’s National School Lunch Week activities via social media by following @DallasISDFood on Facebook and Instagram, and by using hashtag #DISDLunchPlaylist.
