American Council of Engineering Companies of Dallas supports students in math and science

For the past 10 years, Dallas ISD has partnered with the American Council of Engineering Companies of Dallas (ACEC Dallas chapter) for two great opportunities for students.

Bytes for Kids is sponsored by the Texas Engineering Research Forum and organized with ACEC Dallas. The program focuses on encouraging elementary students to do their best in science and math, and provides awareness to careers in engineering. Each fall an engineer comes to speak to fifth-grade students about the world of engineering, and challenges them to give their all with the promise of iPads for four top students in May.

Each six weeks for every A in Math and/or Science, students  are entered into a drawing and, in addition, administrators are asked to identify a “most improved“ in both Math and Science. A total of 36 top students will receive iPads from engineers during fifth-grade assemblies.  Current partner schools include:

  • Martha Turner Reilly Elementary
  • Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary
  • Gilbert Cuellar Sr. Elementary
  • Pleasant Grove Elementary
  • Ignacio Zaragoza Elementary
  • BH Macon Elementary
  • Highland Meadows Elementary
  • Esperanza Hope Medrano Elementary
  • C.F. Carr Elementary

In addition, the organization provides annual scholarships for Dallas ISD students pursuing an engineering degree. This year’s awards include:

Eduardo Sanchez Jimenez, Justin Ford Kimball HS

Daniella Olguin, Skyline High School

Nicah Anderson, Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy

The applications are posted each January on the district’s scholarship web page at https://www.dallasisd.org/Page/21975.
