A Class of 2018 graduate is one of the top two Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars in the state.

Kimmy Chang, who gradated last May as the School of Science and Engineering’s (SEM) valedictorian, earned the State AP Scholar Award by scoring a 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP exams, and the highest average scores on the AP exams she took. She currently attends Stanford University. She is just one of this year’s top AP Scholars in Texas.

The list of AP tests Chang took is a bit staggering: AP Human Geography, AP Calculus AB, AP Computer Science A,  AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Calculus BC, AP World History, AP Physics 1, AP Art History, AP Chemistry, AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP U.S. History, AP Latin, AP Stats, AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Physics 2, AP Studio Art: 2-D Design, AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, AP Macroeconomics, AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP Comparative Government and Politics, and AP Psychology.

An emphasis on Advanced Placement tests at Dallas ISD’s School of Science and Engineering is seeing great success.

All SEM students are required to take AP Calculus. In 2011, 73 percent of SEM students passed the AP Calculus exam. In 2018, 100 percent passed the exam, with 75 percent (78 out of 106 students) earning the top score of 5. Nationally, 19 percent of students score a 5 on the AP Calculus exam.
