The Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program gives Dallas ISD high school juniors and seniors real world experience in a professional field.
The Hub is spotlighting some of these Dallas ISD students participating in the program. Today, meet Daniel Akwei, a student at W.T. White High School who is interning with Dallas ISD’s Communications Department.
What is your role as an intern?
As an intern, I researched and updated school files such as cataloging new principals and more. I assisted the Internal Communications/Marketing Department in making school brochures for Dallas ISD Schools. Furthermore, I also worked with Dallas ISD Bond Communications while also spotlighting fellow Mayor’s Intern Fellows on the Hub. Lastly, I assisted Dallas Schools Television (DSTV) on a back-to-school video.
What do you hope to accomplish through the internship?
Through this internship, the most important things I hope to have are lots of experiences in different departments and professionally network with my employers. I want to apply what I learn in my future career field. This internship has also assisted me in deciding which career would be best for me in the future.
What do you hope your career will be after school?
After I graduate high school, I hope to attend a four-year university and major in Pharmacy, and possibly have a minor in Marketing. After that, I plan on heading to a medical school to become a fully certified Pharmacist.
What have you learned through the internship?
Working with various Dallas ISD Departments has taught me that everyone has a responsibility that has to be done. Many things don’t always go as planned, but, regardless, people are working to try to make a difference. I’ve also learned and seen the hard work that it takes to be part of a team to accomplish a goal. Finally, I’ve also seen what it takes to run and assist a school district. I’m proud to be a part of Dallas ISD!
