Board recognizes stellar student-athletes at its May 25 meeting

At its May 25 meeting, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees recognized several student-athletes and their coaches for achievement this year.

  • Marcus Garrett, a senior at Skyline High School, is the 2016-2017 Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. Garrett, who will attend the University of Kansas on a full basketball scholarship, is now in the running for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.
  • The David W. Carter High School Girls Track and Field Team are the 4A State Champions, scoring 72 points and setting two 4A state conference records. The team, comprising Jayla Smith, ShaCarri Richardson, Deziree Porter and Zhalyn Richards, won the 4A 4×100 meter relay in 45.96 seconds, setting the state record. ShaCarri Richardson won the gold in the 4A 200-meter dash and the 4A 100-meter dash in 11.28 seconds, another state record.
  • The David W. Carter High School Boys 4×400 meter relay team won gold at the 4A state meet. The team includes Desmond Scott, Antonio Gage, David Butler, Danny Gray, and are coached by Howard McCoo and Kenneth Royal.
  • The James Madison High School Boys Track and Field team earned gold medals in the 100 meter dash run by Danny Gray, and also the 4×100 meter relay.
