Four Dallas ISD students competed in the Inaugural Mayor’s Cup on April 27, hosted by Mayor Mike Rawlings and the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance.

The topic for debate was to discuss how education vouchers leave the most needy students behind. Students debating in support of the statement were Kathy Nguyen, North Dallas High School; and Victor Peña, Thomas Jefferson High School. Debating against the statement were Ricardo Rodriguez, W.T. White High School; and Sophie Rahman, School of Science and Engineering.

The competition judges picked Nguyen and Peña as the winners.

The nonprofit Dallas Urban Debate Alliance, founded in 2007, supports the access of competitive academic debate to high schools in the Dallas area, including 50 Dallas ISD high schools and middle schools.
