Approximately 140 Dallas ISD teachers received more than $100,000 in materials and supplies for classroom enrichment projects thanks to DonorsChoose.org and a $1 million donation from Staples.

As part of the Staples for Students program, Staples and Katy Perry are helping teachers across the country this back-to-school season. Staples funded the balance of every teacher-led project listed on DonorsChoose.org in Dallas. With a donation of $185,155, Staples helped 212 teachers, the majority of which work in Dallas ISD, make more happen in their classrooms.

“Staples is a fantastic partner of Dallas ISD, and they have stepped up in a huge way to help our teachers start the school year on their best possible foot,” said Tom Hayden of Dallas ISD’s Volunteer and Partnership Services.

For example, Mrs. Hatcher at W. E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy will receive nine Kindle Fires for students in her Advancement Via Individual Determination program. Many students in this program will be the first in their families to attend college and don’t have Internet access in their homes. The Kindle Fires will give her students instant internet access in class in order to access information such as college and career research projects, information for tutorials and taking virtual tours of college campuses.

Other funded projects range from an LCD projector for a classroom at Lee A. McShan Jr. Elementary School to bookshelves for a classroom at Leonides Gonzalez Cigarroa, M.D. Elementary School.

“It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am for your donation to my project,” wrote Mrs. Garcia Sanchez, a teacher at Herbert Marcus Elementary School who received funding to buy 20 caps and gowns for her students’ kindergarten graduation ceremony. “I am committed to providing students with a relevant curriculum that develops lifelong skills, and it is inspiring to see so many others that share my vision. Thank you once more for your generosity. We can’t wait to begin!”

When the materials funded through the generosity of DonorsChoose.org partners are shipped to schools, each campus accepts and documents the donations according to district policy.
