May 2-6 is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week!

Like their counterparts across the nation, Dallas ISD teachers and staff are uncommon heroes as they play an essential role in student success. During Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, we invite the community to join us in recognizing the dedicated educators and staff members who wholeheartedly commit themselves to helping all students succeed.

Each day this week, we will recognize a Dallas ISD teacher and staff member in the district.

Today, we salute Sharon Foster, a teacher at Bowie Elementary, and Nellisia Toliver, a counselor at Kimball High School.

Sharon Foster, physical education teacher at Bowie Elementary

What has been your favorite moment as a teacher?

My favorite moment as a teacher is receiving the 2014-2015 Alliance for a Healthier Generation award from President Clinton. James Bowie Elementary was the first school in Texas to receive the award.

The best thing about being a teacher in Dallas ISD is…

The best thing about being a teacher in Dallas ISD is looking forward to each day of educating my students.

One way you hope to impact students is….

One way I hope to impact students is by being a role model of the health and fitness attributes I believe will increase their longevity.

Nellisia Toliver, counselor at Kimball High School

What has been your favorite moment as a counselor?

Throughout my counseling years, I’ve experienced a lot of favorite moments. But the one that trumps them all thus far is graduating my first 2014 senior class. This was a very emotional and proud moment witnessing these students that I worked so hard with walk across the stage and receive their diploma.

The best thing about being a counselor in Dallas ISD is…

The passion behind my work stems from being the embodiment of what Dallas ISD can offer its students. Opening the doors of success I once was introduced to as a former Dallas ISD student is the most gratifying part of my profession.

One way you hope to impact students is….

To continue providing a holistic positive impact on each of my students that promotes successful, healthy choices and behaviors that will help them learn from their past, build on their present to reach their future goals.
