With the Nov. 3 election less than a month away, The Hub is breaking down how proceeds from the proposed $1.6 billion bond, which is not expected to raise tax rates, would impact each of Dallas ISD’s nine trustee districts.

Please note: All bond projects, project amounts, and program allocations are estimates, and could change in the future. This is a guide to District 5.

New and replacement schools

Proceeds from the proposed bond are anticipated to create a new elementary school located in the far southeast area of Dallas ISD to serve as a relief for Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary.

In West Dallas, proceeds from the proposed bond are anticipated to create a new PreK–8 campus.

Proceeds from the proposed bond are also anticipated to create two new high schools in District 5 to replace existing structures. One campus is anticipated to replace the existing L.G. Pinkston High School, and it’s expected to have a career and technical education (CTE) component. The location is still to be determined.

Meanwhile, Franklin D. Roosevelt High School is anticipated to get a partial replacement, along with auditorium upgrades and CTE programming.

Examples of CTE programs are:

  • culinary arts,
  • information technology,
  • health sciences,
  • and hospitality/tourism.

The district would hold community meetings to help determine the structure of the potential new West Dallas school, as well as the CTE programs best suited to the proposed Pinkston and Roosevelt campuses.

40 new classrooms, and other upgrades

Proceeds of the bond are anticipated to create 40 new classrooms at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. Plans call for 28 additional District 5 schools to receive capital upgrades, including roofs, HVAC, interior improvements and plumbing. All Dallas ISD schools will receive technology upgrades.
