Athletics turns to technology to connect with parents and fans

The Dallas ISD Athletics Department this school year is utilizing technology more than ever to connect fans to district sporting events.

Are you looking for a schedule of your school’s football or volleyball games? How about help locating a field house or stadium? Did you miss a game and really want to know the score? This information, and much more, is now all available online.

The district this year is using RankOneSport, a team management and scheduling system that lets fans find athletic competitions, access maps to sports venues, and sign up to receive alerts and postgame scores.

Athletics is also doing more to communicate via its department website, including posting photos of competitions and information about district and community events, scholarship resources and health information. The site also includes links to related entities such as University Interscholastic League, national school sports associations and the Dallas Morning News High School Sports section.

“It’s all about customer service and making sure our supporters know what’s going on,” Assistant Athletics Director Annette Scogin said. “We want parents and community members to support our teams and our kids, so we’re employing technology to make that easier.”

Scogin said the new technology also benefits coaches and trainers. Through RankOneSports, team rosters can be electronically updated, parents can complete required forms and paperwork online, and coaches can safely record data on player injuries, practices and eligibility.

“It’s a lot less tedious and more secure because paperwork is no longer kept in the coach’s file cabinet,” Scogin said, adding that parents, coaches, and even the news media seem to be embracing the new technology. “We’ve received a real positive response to these tools. After all, it’s now the way of the world.”

Additionally, the Athletics Department has a Twitter account it uses to share information about games, activities involving student-athletes and things such as staff training. Follow the department at @dallasathletics.
