Retired Army Lt. Col. Robert Davis has been named Director of Army Instruction of the Year by the U.S. Army’s Cadet Command, which is based at Ft. Knox, Kentucky.
Davis is the director of Army Instruction for Dallas ISD’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. His commendation is one of 12 national awards of excellence presented by the U.S. Army Cadet Command, which is responsible for the Army’s junior and senior ROTC programs.
On the Cadet Command website, Army officials said the awards recognize the recipients’ “contributions to training excellence and their roles in furthering the Command’s dual missions of preparing the next generation of the Army’s leaders, as well as a new generation of productive, responsible citizens.”
A Dallas ISD employee for 15 years, Davis oversees JROTC programs for 23 high schools, and Leadership Cadet Corps programs for 30 middle schools. He is responsible for the quality of classroom instruction and integrated-curricular activities. An estimated 10,000 students participate in the two programs.
Davis described the award as a tribute to his staff, the army instructors, who he describes as “difference makers” for their tireless work with cadets.
“While I am honored beyond words, it is critical that the public know this honor is a direct reflection of the hard-working men and women of this department and the resolve of the cadets to seek meaningful and lasting improvement in their lives,” he said.
Davis also credits the district’s leaders for providing him the guidance, leadership and support to direct an award-winning program.
His selection as the top DAI in America recognizes Davis’ outreach efforts and involvement with schools, students and local civic organizations dedicated to the overall improvement of education. A Distinguished Military Graduate, Davis is a recipient of the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit, and he is a veteran of more than 20 years of active duty, including combat tours in Iraq and Kuwait.
Davis will be honored at a formal recognition ceremony during the August meeting of the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees.
