The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees recognized outstanding partners, volunteers, students and student groups at its May 2015 board meeting.
The Trinity Chapter of The Links, Inc., established its “So SMAART” program to mentor girls in grades 4-8 to encourage them to pursue nontraditional careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. To date, the program has motivated nearly 1,000 Dallas-area girls. In addition, the chapter has awarded more than $100,000 in college scholarships.
Also recognized were:
- Mara Berber, parent volunteer at H.I. Holland at Lisbon Elementary School.
- Willie Garnett, community volunteer at Roger Q. Mills Elementary School.
- Rachel Thomas of Frito-Lay, partner with Wilmer-Hutchins High School.
- Polla Corral of Love in Motion, partner with William B. Travis Academy.
- Xzavien Ausborne, a student at South Oak Cliff High School, placed third in the UIL 5A State 100 meter and 200 meter dashes at the State Track and Field Meet in Austin.
- Luca Chatam, a student at Woodrow Wilson High School, placed second in the UIL 5A State 800-meter run at the State Track and Field Meet. He placed fourth in the 1600-meter run and is also the Region II Champion.
- Bradley Loftis, a student at James Madison High School, placed second at the UIL 4A Boys Singles Tennis final in College Station. This was his second trip to the State Finals, his second silver medal. He is a three-time Regional Champion.
- The L.V. Stockard Middle School robotics team, which represented Dallas ISD at the National SeaPerch Challenge in Massachusetts.
- Christi Burell, teacher at Emmett J. Conrad High School, who oversees the school’s Peer Assistance Leadership (PALs) program. Students mentor students three times a week at Lee A. McShan Jr. Elementary School.
