More than $1.37 million in Stars on the Rise scholarships will be awarded to 275 graduating seniors across north Texas, including from Dallas ISD. The program is coordinated by the Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and funded through drives and corporate donations.
The scholarships range from $2,000 to $96,000 – the highest amount representing a four-year scholarship from Austin College. During the past 32 years, the fund has given more than $30 million in scholarships to more than 3,500 students.
A news conference on Tuesday, June 16, highlighted the amounts raised and the partnerships that make the scholarships possible. Several Texas colleges and universities contributed to the fund. Dallas ISD employees donated more than $21,500 for scholarships. The Greenville Avenue Area Business Association donated $10,000 and an anonymous donor contributed $22,000. The Ford Motor Company Fund provided $350,000 in scholarships. The car company fund, along with La Paloma Taqueria, are presenting co-sponsors in the program.
An awards ceremony will honor recipients at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, 6911 Lemmon Ave.
