The seven-person Destination Imagination team from Bryan Adams High School traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee with their creativity in tow and brought back a second-place win in the global competition that featured nearly 1,500 teams from around the world.
The team’s service learning project that focused on literacy was inspired by each of the member’s love for reading. The team presented their project at the Destination Imagination Global competition in May.
The students developed their project, Literacy Militia, in an effort to increase access to books in their area, which doesn’t have a free library nearby. The team’s first step was to create a portable library at nearby Kiest Elementary and provide tutoring for students in the lower grades.
To capture the essence of their effort, the students developed costumes to help tell the project’s story and represent its major components. The team members dressed as The Golden Gate Bridge to show how they bridged their campus with another school; Mount Rushmore to show how they used rock solid techniques in tutoring younger students; the Statue of Liberty to show that supporting education provides freedom to pursue success; and Disneyland to promote reading as a means to travel or visit places around the world. A team member also dressed as the Dallas skyline for good measure.
The team was comprised of: Alejandro Arteaga, Daniela Gonzalez, Anel Quevedo, Karen Macias, Julian Carrillo, Gabriel Ortiz, Thomas Jennings II, and Coach Debra Jones.
