By definition, superheroes are those with the power and stamina to go far above and beyond the feats of normal humans to help make life better for mere mortals.
Move over Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wonder Woman, it’s time to make room for the real superheroes—the men and women of Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services Department. They possess the extraordinary talent to persuade students to eat veggies, the power to counter students’ preference for fat-filled fast food, and the know-how to make nutritious foods kids actually like.
Many of these heroes and heroines got into full character recently as they donned the uniforms of more well-known superheroes for the Food and Child Nutrition Department’s observance of National School Lunch Hero Day celebrated May 1. The event served as the kickoff for School Nutrition Appreciation Week, which is May 4-8. A highlight of the week is the recognition of cafeteria staffs from across Dallas ISD. Each day this week, FCNS directors will surprise the staff of one school cafeteria to underscore the sentiments of students and faculty who think their cafeteria workers are simply the best.
More than 700 nominations were submitted for the Heart of a Child Nutrition Award, an effort to recognize the 1500 employees who take on the daily challenge of serving tasty, nutritious meals to more than 150,000 students and faculty. If asked, Superman would probably say that accomplishment alone qualifies them for superhero status.
